Ohio, a Fracking Dumping Ground, Now Wonders About the Safety of Its Drinking Water


I guess that the state of Ohio is having one of those “Well, duh!” moments, when the folks there realize that expansive environmental degradation is not just the domain of their neighbors across the river in West Virginia.
            As with my last post that ended with West Virginia Senate Majority Leader John Unger warning that the toxic spill that deprived 300,000 residents of his state of basic drinking water could, if ignored, serve as a harbinger to the rest of the country. Through the lax enforcement of regulation and even the absence of regulation other parts of the country could have poisoned water pouring out of their taps as well.
            Just as West Virginia leads the country in mountaintop removal, Ohio leads the country in being a dumping ground for fracking waste. Fracking requires tons and tons of water, which becomes contaminated because of the chemicals used in the fracking process. Because Ohio is blessed, or cursed depending on your point of view, with unique rock layers that are ideal for disposing of fracking waste, the Buckeye State is home to over 200 injection wells where hydraulic fracturing waste is pumped deep underground, sometimes as deep as 5,000 feet.
            With so many West Virginians out of water for so long, a number of Ohioans are now asking how safe is it to pump tons and tons of waste under the rocks that provide their groundwater. A major spill in a river is a disaster, but the flow of the water cleanses the river within weeks or months. On the other hand, once groundwater is contaminated, it could be decades or even centuries before the contaminants make their way from an aquifer.
            Just as it seems obvious, now, that letting a large tank filled with a toxin to sit next to a major water source was a bad idea, you kind of wonder why weren’t some Ohioans a little leery of letting folks pump toxic waste into the rocks under their state in the first place.

Ohio’s State EPA Chief Resigns, Says Governor Wanted Him Out Because of Clashes With King Coal

Ohio’s top waterways watchdog to resign, says Kasich wanted him out


The head of Ohio’s state Environmental Protection Agency is resigning. The governor of the state wants his resignation because of pressure from the coal industry. George Elmaraghy, who has served in the Ohio state EPA for 39 years, explained in an email to his staff that the coal industry wants “permits that may have a negative impact on Ohio’s streams and wetlands and violate state and federal laws. Now, due to this situation, the governor’s office and the director have asked me to resign my position.” The full text of the letter can be found here.
            John Kasich, a member of the GOP who became governor of Ohio in 2011, has received large campaign donations from coal companies. Since he started his gubernatorial campaign in 2009, Ohio’s King Coal has donated almost one million dollars to statewide and legislative candidates. The Lion's share of that money came from just two coal companies: Boich Companies and Murray Energy.
            It looks like Elmaraghy is a man who does his job. Environmental interests describe him as fair-minded. It also looks like the big dollars of King Coal gets them what they want, too.

More Science Reveals the Harmful Legacy of Surface Mining for Coal


It’s looking like the science is telling us what we have pretty much figured all along, that surface mine reclamation is only a half measure at best. In a recently published scientific paper, “Exploring the legacy effects of surface coal mining on stream chemistry,” scientists studied 30 surface mines in a southern Ohio watershed. The study found that, though reclamation efforts to reduce acid mine runoff seem to be successful, the conductivity of stream water continued to remain high, with some concentrations high enough to impair the biota of many streams. Levels of aluminum in the streams remained high as well.
            The study examined stream waters in the Raccoon Creek watershed, which flows directly into the Ohio River. The study found that, when it came to conductivity, reclamation efforts had little effect. The greatest predictor of high conductivity in a subwatershed was the percentage of the area of that watershed that had been surface mined. The greater the percentage of land that had been mined, the higher the conductivity.

Conductivity is the measure of water’s ability to pass a current of electricity. High conductivity of water is usually an indication of the presence of inorganic dissolved solids, such as
chlorides, nitrates, sulfates, and phosphates. High conductivity can also indicate the presence of sodium, magnesium, calcium, iron, and aluminum. In streams conductivity is measured in microsiemens per cubic centimeter (uS/cm2). Streams that have a good mix of native fish have conductivity ranging from 150 and 500 uS/cm2. Ecological impairment and decreased biological diversity are found in streams with conductivity exceeding 500 uS/cm2. Eight of the 30 sites in the study had conductivity levels exceeding the 500 uS/cm2 threshold.
            Aluminum is a common trace element in coal. It can be disruptive to streams and lakes and, as it has been associated with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, is not desired at high levels for drinking water. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency limits the amount of aluminum in drinking water to 0.20 milligrams per liter. This limit was exceeded at 20 of the 30 sites. Moreover, aluminum toxicity to fish has been observed as low as 0.10 milligrams per liter.
            Reclamation, to me, has always seemed like a Humpty Dumpty scenario. Take apart a hillside or a mountain, and all the king’s horses and all the king’s men could never replace the land, streams, and ecosystems as they once were. Common sense tells us this, now the science is confirming it.
